Jets Fly off with Points

MANCHESTER PHOENIX  3 - 4  SLOUGH JETS
(AFTER Penalty shots)
slough 1-0 pens

Sunday night saw the Manchester Phoenix trying to break a 3 game losing streak against the Slough Jets at the Altrincham Ice dome.

Phoenix had the night before lost further ground on the League leaders as Basingstoke Bison beat them 5-2 down at the Basingstoke Planet Ice and as i said last week, has given the Bison a MASSIVE advantage at this stage of the season.

Phoenix were missing influential forward and energetic Tom Duggan as he`d picked a head injury in the clash down in Basingstoke. Slough were at full strength and had the 3rd best goalie in the league between the pipes in Gregg Rockman who `s save percentage of 91.94% and that doesn`t include his display at Sheffield Steeldogs the previous night.

1st PERIOD

Think the team introduction told us how the night would be as it AGES before Slough came out, played "NO CHANCE IN HELL" 2x and they still hadn`t come out, played another song and another and then after a sound clip of " WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS A FAILFURE TO COMMUNICATE" they skated out!

..BUT ANYWAY back the hockey!

Manchester Phoenix came out of the blocks quickly putting the Slough Jets under a lot of pressure in their zone. And were aggressive and Rockman was under fire for the early part as Phoenix were hoping to start off the game and shake the 3 defeats out of their minds. A Bench penalty on Slough for ICING INFRINGEMENT at 2:00 in put Phoenix on the Powerplay. But as is a Phoenix Tradition the powerplay lacked any kind of powerplay set up.

A shot by McKenzie pinged off the Crossbar down and away to the side boards as his shot had the Jets netminder beat all ends up. Another shot hit metal by Phoenix later on and just seemed for a bit that the puck wouldn`t go in. Eventually the pressure by Phoenix reaped it`s rewards as a scramble in the Jets goal had Rockman unsure of where the puck and everyone else around the crease. Flatten jumped on the puck passed to Hand who found Ciaran Long and his shot hit the underside of the goals and bounced in for a deserved 1-0 lead at 7:43 in the 1st.

Phoenix then wer in penalty trouble as they were caught for an ICING INFRINGEMENT themselves at 10-27. But midway through there penalty Import Mindy Kieras tripped a Phoenix player up while they were ona Powerplay so he went to the box at 11-00 dead. Phoenix kept the pressure on Slough and got another goal as this time Joachim Flatten scored before the net was off this moorings with Tony Hand and Captain Luke Boothroyd assisting on the goal timed at 13-12.

Phoenix looked in control of a mistake ridden game due to poor passing by both teams and the Annual bad ice at the dome around this time of year. But Slough woke up after the 2nd goal and pulled a goal back after work by Dan Davies found ex Phoenix forward Slava Koulikov as the Russian evaded the marking of Hand as he shot past Fone to half the lead in half. The last action of the period came when Bakrlik and unbelievably Cool head Luke Boothroyd getting involved in a little tussle behind the play as both slashed each other and as the referee called the pens Bakrlik skated to Boothroyd giving him a jab in the face and pushing him trying to get him drawn into another pen,but just skated off to the Penalty box and ignore his actions.

End of 1st Period :  Phoenix 2 - 1 Jets

2nd PERIOD
The game for me turned into a massive bore from this point, neither side could pass well enough as players seemed to be doing Prattfalls on the ice and a few times skating and forgetting the puck often. It seemed like who could concentrate and and adapt to the best would come out on top it seemed. But neither side looked like they could at first, but Slough settled more and Manchester fell asleep as normal when holding a lead.
Slough spent the majority of the 2nd period camped in the Phoenix half it seemed to me, As all the pressure in the game now on the Phoenix net.

Slough were attacking more now and looked threatening when going forward and the home side was being snuffed out. Slough frustatrating tactics of playing a methodical slow game and break on the counter a couple of times they had a man adavantage but the shots were sailing high over Fone in goals and hitting the plexi.
An error by the Phoenix led to Slough on a 2-on-1  man advantage though the home got a bit lucky when the passing between the 2 Jets players was slowed by the puck not moving as it should and had the trailing one having to turn away from goal to reach back and get the puck before Kieras fired high and wide.

The period was a really uneventual one as Slough dominated possession but didn`t make it pay, but then with  00:34 seconds left on the board The Jets Finally got the goal there play deserved as that man again Koulikov set up that man that loves to score against Manchester everytime, Darius Pliskauskas as his shot crept under Fone and made it 2 all going into the Intermission break. As the horn went it was met with complete silence as it was such a flat atmosphere and dull game tonight, even with 4 goals scored.

End of 2nd Period:  PHOENIX  2 - 2  JETS

3rd PERIOD

The 3rd period was even more dreadful than the 2nd period and many yawning as it was lacklustre and needed a team or player to spark something to get the game going at all as it was more a mid ice battle and Battle of Attrition the game. As neither side seem to let the other in the game and cancel each other out. It wasn`t one for the the UP and at them EPL fan, as the puck seemed to spend most of the time going out of play than on the ice.

THEN at 53-47 a Rob Schnabel pass found James Archer who was free and skated down on goal 1-on-1 with Rockman coming in from the left wing and he made a move on him deked and slotted it in for a 3-2 lead and one that looked like that would be it as Slough didn`t have many clean chances. But about a minute or 2 after Archer goal Slough scored only for it be rightly Wash-outed as a Jets player was in the creased and was barging Fone out the way and i think Towalski shot it in the open half of the net and the ref straight away gave the WASH-OUT signal. Much to the protests of the Jets players who thought they should have had the goal but the complaints were quickly withdrawn as the Ref deemed it disallowed due to a Man in the crease.

Slough were trying to push for the 2nd goal and Phoenix then resorted as they did for half the game to Dump and chase the puck which was a useless tactic as they were more threatening when taking the puck over the blue line themselves. 2 Mins were on the board and Phoenix started to just cycle the puck around the boards in the Slough zone, but as a couple time happened they ran out of players. To pick it up and just keep it in the corner. The Home side then re used the tactic and when no one chased it the Jets went up the other with Rockman waving his stick asking whether he should dash to the bench for the Extra Attacker.

But as has been a current problem with Phoenix this season they couldn`t hold onto the lead and puck thrown across the goals by Frantisek Bakrlik his effort bounced off the ankle of Ondrej Pozivil and looped in the net for a 3-3 tie with 47 secs left in Regulation! The goal was met with grumbles and cheers as the travelling group of Jets fans celebrated and the Phoenix fans was left frustrated. And so as has been the case often this season at Altrincham we went to Overtime!!

OVERTIME PERIOD

Overtime was one Slough looked to edge it more as a Slapshot by Dan Scott Pinged off the post as Fone lost it through the crowd. Phoenix again used the cycling the puck and again players that did it expected another team mate to following it round and Slough broke and Fone made a cracking save in the Overtime period to deny a Jets OT win. The dying embers of the game Phoenix had a chance to get a shot off with the crowd pleading for them to shoot but they messed around trying to find the perfect pass and goal that it was snuffed out by the Jets and so it led to the 2nd Penalty shoot out this season!

SHOOT-OUT

1ST to go were Phoenix and Joachim Flaten who tried to mak a move on Rockman and his effort was saved by the Jets Netminder.  0-0

Slough first shooter was Darius Pliskauskas he skated in cutting in a bit from the right and tried to go far low corner but was stopped by Fone.

Round 1 of PENALTIES :  0-0

PHOENIX:  was up next with Michal Psurny he skated down the left wing with speed and shot past Rockman but hit the Crossbar much to his frustration.

JETS: Next for them was Frantisek Bakrlik who pushed the puck and skated at snails pace prodding the puck and then as he reached the hash marks he made a quick move with Fone going to his left post and th jets player going  to the other side and guided it in as quick as he skated for the pen! Was like watching slow motion!

Round 2 of penalties: Phoenix 0- 1 JETS

PHOENIX: Ciaran Long then took Phoenix 3rd and final pen, needing to score to keep the game going, but Rockman denied him and consigned Phoenix to 4 Losses on the bounce but pick up a point and which was made worse, that Basingstoke had a Shock defeat, down in Peterboro against the Phantoms 6-3. Making the gap 5pts when it really, had concentration levels been up should have been 4pts. But now attentions turn to next week with the trip to "The HIVE" to faceoff against Bracknell Bees and the sunday home game v the Milton Keynes Lightning!.

Battle of Blues ends in Stalemate

        MANCHESTER CITY    1   -   1 EVERTON

Saturday afternoon saw the Premier League Champions entertain the Royal blue half of Merseyside in Everton at the Etihad Stadium. Everton coming into the game on a back of 2 draws and City after their hard won game v Wigan last Wednesday. So as always a hard tough physical encounter was expected as they usually are Everton.

The early stages saw the visitors look the more threatening of the two teams, with good early pressure coming from the The Toffees, but City defence stood firm. City were called into a quick change of Personnel as Serbian defender Aleksander Kolarov went to cross and felt something go. So raised his arm up to the bench to let them know he was in trouble and had to come off injured with what looked like a Groin strain. And makes the Defensive side of City looking abit bare with Gael Clichy & Long term injury worry Micah Richards still sat on the sidelines.

Everton were the most likeliest team to score and they good play that was predominantly down the left flank
as they seem to target Maicon as he struggling a bit with the play his side, He also many times was out of position leading Kompany and returnee to the side Joleon Lescott helping out as he went forward. Everton had a few chances but wasn`t making bringing Joe Hart into any action.

Eventually the build up play by Everton got them a deserved reward as a cross came by Leighton baines was flicked on Croatian striker Nickica Jelavic and Marouane Fellaini headed goal ward bringing a Fantastic save out of the England number 1 but was helpless to stop the rebound as Fellaini followed his original shot up to send the Away support into raptures, And could David Moyes men inflict the first Home defeat on the blues in 2 years nearly since they were the Team that was last to beat them back in December 2010.

City then shot into action and as Champions took the blow and came back at the Toffees and had a couple of chances, with a Carlos Tevez header creeping goal wards but being saved very well by Everton keeper Tim Howard as got down quickly to push it round the post. Edin Dzeko then had a chance too as he the ball came to him from a Nasri pass and his low shot at the near post was spilled but luckily went out of play and not towards an oncoming City player.

The resulting Corner led to a penalty for the home side as Dzeko was tugged in the area by Fellaini and drew protests by the Everton players for it not to be one. Carlos Tevez took on the responsibility of the spot kick and stroke it down the middle sending Howard the wrong the way and make the score all level at 1 all.
City had most of the possession from then on in the first half and couldn`t break down a tough Everton side.

HALF TIME :  MANCHESTER CITY   1  -   1  EVERTON

2nd half saw City pressure Everton more, as the away side seemed to be willing to sit back and go on the Counter as they frustrated the Champions, Everton had a few good counter attacks but was easily cut out by the 3 solid defenders Pablo Zabeleta, Joleon Lescott and Captain and Man of the Match performance by Vincent Kompany. Everton looked a bit clueless when attacking as the City defense took everything and blocked and looked more solid than earlier in the season.

City attacks abit like Everton were rare, as both side were trying to get the upper hand in the Midfield battle as both cancelled each other out. Dzeko was having his best game for City but when the ball was floated to him instead of trying a pop at goal, he chose to unselfishly head in the direction of a blue shirt and was cleared by the Everton defence.

Mancini made a strange substitution  by taking the aggressive and most mobile striker in Tevez and replaced him with Sergio Aguero to the crowd not liking the move as many if not all thought it would be the Bosnian hitman Dzeko that would make way for him. As it was his appearance didn`t make much of a difference or that of the Controversial Italian striker Mario Balotelli as Dzeko came off for him.

Neither team looked destined to score as the defences cancelled each team out, but after a foul missed by the Referee on a city player Everton stormed up field and a tackle by Zabeleta on Jelavic was deemed to be a foul. So just before Stoppage time Everton had a chance to steal the game and Jelavic himself stepped up and Joe Hart saved it spun and for Hart & City went for a corner.  Time was called on the match and so a point apiece for both sides. With City temporarily going top of the tree for an couple of hours before United played Reading later that evening.

Giants get ROCK-ed by Glasgow!

MANCHESTER GIANTS   77   -   83   GLASGOW ROCKS

Manchester Giants were coming into this game on a 5 Game Winless Streak and was hoping that the Wright Robinson Sports College would be "Home sweet home"and avenge the loss up in the Emirates Arena in Glasgow back in October,But yet again it was a case of same old, same old.

Glasgow started off the better of the 2 teams after going on a run 10-0 after a couple of minutes. The Sleeping Giants so to speak awoke from their slumber and with a couple players down, missing the influential David Aliu from the lineup. The Giants relied on the the team pulling together and trying to get themselves back in the game.

Donald Robinson and Andrew Wedemire were proving to hot to handle for the Giants as they scored basket upon basket. The Rocks looked to be running away with the game as they were the most dangerous of the 2 sides on show. There was then a bit of a delay due to Equipment Malfunction when the foam protection under the basket came loose, so with the Courtside team and officials sorting it out for about 5 mins. There was an unofficial Time out with both teams to regroup and talk things over.

Manchester came back onto the court after hearing what coach Jeff Jones wanted by his men and they did everything but put the ball in the basket as on 3 occasions they shot and missed hitting the target altogether not even reaching the back board either. Glasgow continued to dominate on offense and restrict the home side to shots from the 3pts line. Giants were really missing some one to go to the paint and drive at the Visitors net.

Time ticking down and 1:21 left in the 1st QUARTER the Home side produced some of the best basketball seen by them all season as they went from being 13-17 down to 25-17 up as the last 4 baskets were 3pointers! Eaves shot a 3! Stefan Gill then got in on the act too, Giants D held and fantastically stopped the Rocks threat, James Jones then shot a 3pointer from the Arc and then with seconds to spare  Devan Bailey launched one and went straight in to a standing ovation by the Manchester Crowd at the job they did. Even the coach was in shock with the play.

Manchester coach Jeff Jones would probably have liked his men to have carried on the good play like how they finished in the 1st. But After they built up a 10 pts lead ,it quickly disintegrated with Wedemire and Robinson throwing down 3`s and McNally scoring much to the joy of their travelling support who made the long drive down from Bonnie Scotland and into Foggy Gorton.

Mike Bernard for me this season has been a very frustrating player, as he seems to play a lazy game on both ends of the Court. And one occasion tonight he shielded the ball from their player who tried to get a foul against him, flopped to the foor and Bernard who had no one near him. Proceeded to lay up the ball and miss the basket compeltely when someone that is 6"9 should be making easy plays like that 100% of the time.

Rocks started to get going again and the G-Men were looking lost as they struggled to contain the Men from Glasgow. So after they built up a handy lead of 12-15 points themselves, Jones brought back in the fold Devan Bailey and Ben Eaves back into the attack and taking Bernard and Watts out. And this paid dividends as the Giants clawed the 12 pt margin and with one last play in the 1st half. The home side passed it round looking a for good shot to get, Eaves was passed the ball and he netted the 2pts and time ran down as both teams headed to the changing rooms for Half time with Rocks up by 2.

HALF TIME: GIANTS  38  -  40  ROCKS

3rd Quarter the Scottish visitors started to pull to away but found the Giants trying to drag themselves back into the game. As 3pts and foul trouble started to go against the Giants now as they were finding it hard to keep up the tempo and and block their Offensive pressure as they started to at times Double team players leaving an area open for the Rocks players to drill the 3pointers from most of the time.

Jeff Jones looked so frustrated as his team many a few defensive errors and more players leaving or not picking up players and leaving gaps open to exploit for the Away side to take advantage of and they wer only to happy. A lead of  14 came and Giants brought Bailey and Gill in to the game hoping to ignite the crowd and lift the team too. Bailey and Gill nearly combined to bring the Giant right back into the ball game. With some Jordan-esque play by Bailey he danced around the Rocks defense and threw one up and got the basket and drawn the foul to which the momentum seemed to be swinging towards the Giants again.

A couple of the Manchester players will be nursing a few injures picked up as David Watts picked up a stray elbow from a Glasgow player when blocking a shot, resulting in him spitting blood on court as he may have lost a tooth in the process. And Stefan Gill who was a thorn in the side of the Rocks team, went to lay up a shot and for his efforts drawn a foul but also ended up Giving Blood as he has cut his head open and Claret dripped on the Wright Robinson Court.

After a delay of them cleaning up the blood and getting the court ready for play again, Gill sat on the bench and got treatment and the Giants put their faith in Bailey who was Man of th Match for me with some scintillating plays that would make many Highlight reels. His partner in crime Gill came back head with gel on the cut to stop the bleeding. And with in 1 min he got a body check off Harrison in the Rocks uniform and he  went sliding across the floor and luckily didn`t hit his head on the hard floor either.

2 mins to go Giants Trailing by 8pts Bernard drawn a foul and he made sure he got both free throws, this was now the Giants in control as Glasgow were missing or turning over the ball abit too much now. The score was now 75-78 with 1:51 to play in the game and the Home side in the ascendency. Rocks who looked to have been confident in their shooting all night had now questioned their shooting much to the Giants joy. Giants had a chance to go for the 3pts to take a 1 point lead or do they take a normal basket and  pressure them. The Giants looked to be aggressive now, but a slack pass by Jones led to the Rocks picking the ball up and drawing a foul and so went to the line.

Manchester couldn`t find a way to comeback and Glasgow just scored the baskets as the Giants intentional fouls gave them the chance to flatter the scoreline abit in the end. So the Giants now head to the Surrey Sports Park Saturday night at one of the title favourites Surrey Heat. And the elusive win looks bleak there tomorrow night.

FINAL SCORE:   Manchester GIANTS  77    -    83  Glasgow ROCKS
