Toure helps misfiring City to Victory

MANCHESTER CITY  1 - 0  STOKE CIT

                                                     Toure 70'

Yaya Toure proved the difference once more for Manchester City against Stoke as his second half strike by the Ivory Coast International, helped guide the Blues to a 1-0 victory over former City boss Mark Hughes and his tough Stoke City side at the Etihad Stadium.  With Chelsea picking up three points prior to City`s game taking place, their 1-0 win over Everton made this game even more vital for Manuel Pellegrini side to keep up the pressure on both Chelsea and Arsenal too as they wanted to still be in reach of the Capital sides.

City made a couple of changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Barcelona during midweek in the Champions League 1st leg. As Frenchman Samir Nasri and Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko came in for Jesus Navas and seen Martin Demichelis who was woeful in the defeat to the Catalan side, surprisingly retain his place in the starting 11, but was moved back to Defence where he and Vincent Kompany were the centre-back pairing.
It would be fair to say that City would be having to get used to the sight of Red and White stripes for a couple of weeks as Stoke City donned their traditional colours and City would see Sunderland wearing the same in the cup final a week later. However talk of the cup final was premature as they had to get past Stoke first and it would be fair to say that came to play for a point at the Etihad. Mark Hughes`s men played for a majority of the game with 11 men behind the ball as they hoped to inflict another clean sheet on the home side to which City had failed to score in their previous two league outings and seen Stoke hoping to pick up a vital point down at the wrong end of the table.

Serbian defender Aleksander Kolarov manage to see City finally get behind the Stoke defence in the 5th minute, after he whipped in a wicked ball that saw Asamovic Begovic in the opposition`s goal having to push it away from danger.  City found Stoke`s resistance very hard to break down in the game and the home side didn`t help themselves either with them trying to walk the ball in to away side net too. Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho then had an effort from outside the box tipped over from Begovic, with the goalkeeper seeing  the shot come straight at him. Pablo Zabaleta then had a shot blocked for a corner kick as Stoke was frustrating City in search of an opener.

Stoke nearly opened the scoring themselves in the 21st minute, when a low strike by Charlie Adam saw Joe Hart get down really well to tip it out for a corner and seen the Staffordshire outfit begin to think, that they could possibly do better than just a point in this game.  Yaya Toure then decided to try his luck from outside the penalty area too, but his attempted curling shot was easily dealt with by Begovic and seen Stoke restrict them to shots from long range.

Samir Nasri was next to have a pop for the home side, with a lovely build up by City`s Spanish duo of David Silva and Alvaro Negredo, which seen the striker lay the ball off to Nasri and his shot was blocked by former City player Glenn Whelan for another corner kick. Nasri took a short corner to Silva and after they messed up what they were trying to do, Nasri managed to regain the ball and put a floated ball into the area which saw Negredo have the ball and he fired wide of the target with the Spanish striker going through a dry spell at the moment.

Another neat build up of short passes then saw Silva, Toure and Negredo all link up well together, before the pass back to Toure saw the Ivorian snatch at his shot and see it go wide of the target.  Stoke`s defence was taking a battering by the home side, but they were still holding their ground,  Kolarov then saw his low driven shot come turn into a cross outside the area and the ball teased Negredo and Dzeko, with neither one of them able to find a touch to direct it goal wards.
Edin Dzeko then came close to the game`s first goal, when another great move starting with David Silva saw Dzeko take the pass and play a little one-two with his strike partner Negredo and his curling shot went just inches wide of the post, with City pushing hard. The Blues had one last attack in the first half and seen Fernandinho unable to fully strike the ball as clean as he would have like to have done and saw it skim across the grass to the grasp of Begovic.

Edin Dzeko had another effort fly over the bar in the second half as the Bosnian striker couldn`t get set correct to take a better shot. Alvaro Negredo then saw him brought off for the Montenegro forward in Stevan Jovetic as Pellegrini looked to inject some pace into attack and saw him the forward have a blast, that almost caught Begovic out with the Stoke keeper fumbling the ball. Unfortunately for the forward he was forced to leave the pitch soon after with a possible recurrence of a hamstring injury and seen Javi Garcia replace him. Then after all the hard work and pressure on the Potters defence, City was finally rewarded with a goal and who else but Yaya Toure scored the goal. The Ivory Coast midfielder has a great scoring record against Stoke, with him scoring the FA Cup final winner a few seasons back between the two sides, so if anyone was to find the back of the net of the Stoke net it was certainly going to be him.

It all came from a Samir Nasri pass to Kolarov down the Stoke right, as Kolarov put in a ball that caught the Stoke defence out and even Toure himself. It saw the midfielder do brilliantly well to correct his footing at the last minute to turn the ball home with a fairly ugly finish, but no one in a Blue shirt cared how it went in as City led 1-0 after 70 minutes.  They should definitely have made it 2-0 a couple minutes later, when Toure was his old self again dispossessing a Stoke player in midfielder and saw him fend off a challenge, before passing out to Silva who put a nice ball across to the back post for Dzeko to finish off bit and the striker managed to inexplicably, hit the ball against the back of his own leg and saw the ball get cleared away with Stoke fans cheering and the home fans letting Dzeko know what they thought of him.  Dzeko after the ball was cleared then gave the post a good kick in frustration and seen Stoke still alive in the game.

Javi Garcia then had a go from outside the area himself as his fierce drive had Begovic scrambling to his right, but was able to palm it away for a corner kick to keep it 1-0. Manchester City managed to hold onto to win and see them stay in 3rd place, knowing that if they were to win their game in hand that they can move top of the table on goal difference. The blues now have a league cup final to prepare for and see them hopefully lift some silverware early  with them still technically challenging for the quadruple, though Sunderland their opponents will have something to say about that you can guarantee come Sunday.

SIX NATIONS: Wales roar back, Scottish win in Rome and England beat Irish in Classic

WALES  27 - 6 FRANCE

Wales enjoyed home comforts in the third round of matches in the Six Nations championship. The Welsh was expected to come up against an in-form France side at the Millenium Stadium, instead it was the Red shirts of Wales that proved to be red hot in this encounter. Warren Gatland had wanted to get a response from his reigning champions, after they had been mauled in more ways than one in their previous outing against the current leaders in Ireland  when they played a fortnight ago in Dublin.

It was an unbelievable opening twenty minutes of play for the home side in which seen Wales lead 14-3 as France didn`t know what had hit them at all.  Leigh Halfpenny gave the Welsh the lead after just Three minutes of play, when the French conceded at the ruck to see them ahead in the game at 3-0.  That lead then got increased after some hesitation in the French ranks noticeably, by Full-back Brice Dulin as he tried to let the ball bounce first and in doing so let in George North behind him, who nipped in ahead of him to grab the ball and go over the try line for a early 8-0 score line.

Pascal Pape was then penalised for kicking the ball out of the scrum and in which, gave Halfpenny a chance to redeem himself for missing an earlier conversion. However this time round he made no mistake at all and his kick sailed through for an 11-0 score after just 9 minutes of play. Jean-Marc Doussain then kicked over a penalty for France to see the visitors get on the scoreboard that was before Leigh Halfpenny then converted another penalty this time from 40 metres out, to make it 14-3.

Jules Plisson took over kicking duties for Les Bleus and his first effort went over the bar to see them cut the gap down to just 8 points.  Wales won yet another penalty as the French was lacking a lot of discipline throughout their side and saw Wesley Fofana get stuck between the proverbial  ‘rock and a hard place’ as he chose to just lay on the ball, which in part gave the hosts a chance to go further ahead thanks to the boot of Halfpenny for a 17-6 lead.  France conceded yet another penalty, courtesy of their own scrum this time round and seen Wales have a commanding 20-6 lead.

Second half saw both Gethin Jenkins and Nicolas Mas head to the sin bin for consistence offences at the scrum and so saw both sides down to 14 men in the 50th minute. France found themselves down to 13 men on the pitch, when France Captain Louis Picamoles was shown the yellow card after he lost his head and was clearly frustrated, as he shoved a couple of Welsh players as well as grabbing them round the throats too. Allan Rolland then shown the Captain yellow and he responded with a sarcastic applause towards the match official.

Wales pushed for more points with the man advantage and saw them score another try, through the efforts of Captain Sam Warburton who managed to get some downward pressure on the ball with his fingertips making contact to see the home side lead 27-6 with Halfpenny adding extras. The win for Wales saw them move into Second place going level on points with Ireland who would face England the next day.

 ITALY  20 – 21  SCOTLAND

Scotland`s Duncan Weir drop goal helped the Scots pick up a massive win in Rome to beat Italy and did it with plenty of grit, determination and hard work throughout the side. It also seen the Scots record their first away victory in the competition with their last win coming back in 2010.

Italy took the lead in the 13th minute of play, after a penalty against the visitors gave the former U18 player for Scotland in Tomasso Allen the chance to put the country of his birth ahead and saw his kick go over to see the Olimipico Stadium go mad with celebrations as they led 3-0. Scotland responded 9 minutes later, when good work by the visitors saw them go through the phases and their terrific build up play saw Scotland awarded a penalty. Greig Laidlaw then managed to do something he was unable to do in the last game and that was see his a kick successfully go through the posts to see Scott Johnson men go level.

The Scots was getting penalised at alarmingly regular rate by referee Steve Walsh as he made some baffling calls against the away team, but that also seen Allan have the chance to put Italy back ahead in the contest and he did just that, as the home side retook the lead again with his successful penalty kick.  Italy then pressured the Scottish defence and after some good work by Sergio Parisse that saw him get dangerously close to the Scottish try line, Tomasso Allan then collected and went over the line to see Italy lead 13-3 at half time with the former Scottish player scoring all of the Italian`s points.

Five minutes into the second half of play, Greig Laidlaw then kicked over a penalty for Scotland to seem them hunt down the Italians after they conceded a penalty at the breakdown and seem the score line become 13-6 to the hosts. Scotland then grabbed a well worked try when play was spread wide by the forwards and seen Stuart Hogg pass to Alex Dundar, who then dashed for the corner to see them trail by just a margin of two points at 13-11.  That try gave the visitors the belief that they could go on and win this game now and Italy was visibly rocked at this point in time.

That belief grew around the entire team after that try for the visitors, when Scotland took the lead for the first time in the game.  Scotland built up from the back and with some lovely all round play in the passing department and with nice some off loads, it saw Alex Dunbar make another run for the try line and in doing so he managed to out run the Italian defence and see them lead 18-13.  With 10 minutes to go in the match, Italy scored a try through Josh Furno which saw the Scottish back line found wanting, after Sergio Parisse had set up Furno to go over and with Luciano Orquera kicking the extras to go 20-18 up.

With less than a minute of play to go in this game, Scotland saw their maul drive the Italians back to the Hosts 22 metre line and Scotland keeping their eyes on the time left and field placements, the ball came back to Duncan Weir and his Drop goal attempt went high and through the uprights to see Scotland pick up victory and see them win the match in dramatic fashion 21-20.

ENGLAND 13-10 IRELAND

Ireland`s winning run in the Six Nations tournament this year came to an end at the hands of England, as their first match away from the Aviva Stadium in the tournament seen them lose an absolute classic at Twickenham. England managed to just edge this pulsating and breathtaking contest, to see them move level on points with Ireland and make the title a four-horse race as things hot up to see who takes the crown this year.

The game got off to a frenetic start that saw Ireland put pressure on the English scrum early on and saw them over power the home side at the scrum. This was Ireland drawing first blood in the game, as England knew now what they were dealing with for the next Eighty minutes of this contest game.  England then came straight back at Ireland and thought they had scored an early try after Jonny May went over the line for the home side, but saw Conor Murray manage to stop May from scoring. South African official Craig Joubert sent the decision upstairs for the TMO to look at it and confirm the decision. Replays shown May had lost the ball when attempting to ground the ball and in doing so lost the ball and so the decision was a NO TRY was given.

We then saw in the 25th minute Owen Farrell kick over the games first points as a 50 metre penalty kick sail over for the home side to make it 3-0 after Ireland committed a foul in the line out. Farrell then had another kick to increase the last ten minutes of the first half, but the ball struck the outside of the post and the score remained the same.

In the opening few minutes of the second half, Ireland stormed their way into the lead after Rob Kearney ran into a gap and under the posts for a well worked Ireland try and ended, in a 7-3 lead for the away side after Johnny Sexton kicked the conversion over. Things got even better for the Irish soon after, when Sexton successfully kicked over a penalty for the Green shirts to take a 10-3 lead and the Irish fans and players were certainly smiling. England then burst into life in the 51st  minutes for a couple of minutes, when they suddenly took the lead. Luther Burrell went close to the line for the English until the Irish defence held firm and saw them stop the white shirts from grabbing a try.

England won a penalty as a result of their hard play and although they should have switched the play to the outside, Farrell kicked over from close range to make it 10-6 in Irelands favour, but England were gaining momentum . Then in the 55th minute, Mike Brown managed to cut through the Irish defence like a knife and kept his head to offload to Danny Care who ran the ball home to see England make it 13-10 and turn the game on it`s head. England now had the momentum with them and with Ireland pushing the home side all the way to the final whistle. Stuart Lancaster`s men gave as good as they got, to show the powerful Ireland side that this young England side was no push over of the hosts. Stuart Lancaster at the full time whistle shown his delight at winning a hard contested match with both sides committed in the game.

England congratulate themselves on a hard earned win PIC: ESPN RUGBY
This now sees Wales, Ireland, France and England all in with a chance to take the crown home and makes for an exciting final two games in the competition.

Phoenix SWARM over the Bees

 MANCHESTER  PHOENIX                6 - 2     BRACKNELL BEES

Manchester Phoenix returned to winning ways on Sunday recording a 6-2 victory over the Bracknell Bees, after they were beaten 5-1 by the league leading Basingstoke Bison on the Saturday night. Two points was essential for Manchester as having a pointless weekend would have been than a massive blow to the club.

Phoenix squandered an early powerplay opportunity after Matt Foord sat for two in the penalty box after he was called for Charging at 3-14 in the game.
Manchester was unable to find the net in their first powerplay chance and was also unable to even get a shot on goal too. Bracknell tried their hardest to get something going their way, but they too struggled to find their aiming with both sides needing to get their collective shooting in order. Alex Mettam and Steve Fone didn`t really face much rubber being shot at them at all in the opening period, with a lot of shots being dragged wide.

Eventually all the possession the home side had in the game finally saw them strike first after Robin Kovar opened the scoring at 10-04 of the opening period. The goal all came from a rebound off a Grant Rounding effort for the Bees and from that saw the puck hacked away into the path of Frantisek Bakrlik, who made a little tip towards his fellow Countryman Robin Kovar. This then saw Bakrlik take the pass back and as he skated into the Bracknell zone, he played it across for Kovar to finish off and beat Mettam high over his glove to complete a nice move between the Czech pair and lead 1-0. Bracknell then drew level at 14-47 in the game after their own Czech Import Lukas Smital made it 1-1. Bees Czech forward then managed to squeeze his shot from a tight angle, as it beat Fone at the front of the net and made it even-steven with Scott Spearing and Lewis Turner getting assists on the Bees opening goal.

Manchester`s response took less than two minutes to come, after Player-coach Tony Hand put his side back ahead at 16-22. Hand`s goal came after getting a little pass by James Archer near the boards and that saw Hand take possession of the puck and with it saw him skate in the Bees zone on a 2 on 1 for the Phoenix, the Scot then shot it past Mettam at the near post to make it 2-1 with Rob Schnabel gaining a credit on the goal too. Manchester controlled the period really and after Hand scored their Second, they never looked to be in trouble after that and saw them head into the first intermission leading by a goal.

In the Second period Bracknell almost tied the game, when a pass up ice towards Scott Spearing caught the Phoenix defence out and luckily for the Phoenix, Spearing`s effort was shot high over the net and hit the plexi glass.
Tony Redmond then picked up Hooking penalty at 24-04 to put Manchester back out on the powerplay and from that, saw Phoenix go close but no cigar as the phrase goes. Just as Redmond left the penalty box for Bracknell, Phoenix kept up the constant pressure on the visitors with Bakrlik having a blast saved by Mettam and saw the home side pressure the Bees goals and led to another powerplay, with Pavel Strycek heading to the box for Holding at 31-12. Manchester this time saw their hard work pay off as they added a Third goal, courtesy of a James Archer strike at 32-07.

Good puck movement by the home side, seen Bakrlik play the puck round from the half boards to the waiting Tony Hand and from there he then fed the puck out to the front to net, where Archer then slammed it home at the near post to make it 3-1. Bakrlik almost made it 4-1 for the home side when a great pass by Joe Graham seen the Czech sniper put through on goal and his effort dinged off the crossbar to see the Bees clear away.
Bracknell then pulled a goal back whilst on the powerplay, thanks to Bees Man of the Match in Grant Rounding. The goal scored was a very fortunate one for the Bees, with Tony Redmond shot on goal striking the post before it bounced back off Andy McKinney leg and trickled goal wards with Rounding quick to poke it home for a 3-2 game.

The goal scored was a very fortunate one for the Bees, with Tony Redmond shot on goal striking the post before it bounced back off Andy McKinney leg and trickled goal wards with Rounding quick to poke it home for a 3-2 game.

The final period saw the Phoenix score after just 49 seconds for them to go 4-2 up in the contest after the Czech duo combined once again, with Frantisek Bakrlik assisting Robin Kovar on his Second goal of the game, as Kovar`s wrist shot sent Alex Mettam`s waterbottle flying into the corner of the Bees zone and saw the hosts all but secure victory.
There was no collapse by Manchester`s defence in this game as they looked stronger as the game went on, however the Bees defence was made to pay.
Andy McKinney netted goal number Five for the home side, after a forceful pass by Graham on the blue line saw McKinney do great to take control the puck, as the British forward back-handed the puck in the net for a 5-2.

Manchester then got a lucky bounce in more ways than one, when a puck fired in by Joe Graham took a funny bounce off the boards behind Mettam net and the netminder managed to poke the puck right onto Bakrlik stick and saw him score at 49-45. It was a much deserved goal for the Czech forward, after he had grafted a lot in the game and the goal it`s self was in keeping with the type of goals that has been seen in Manchester in recent weeks, as there has certainly been some strange goals at the Dome this year. Manchester claimed victory and saw them claw Two points back on the Bison in the race for the title, with Manchester still having their own fate in their hands too, especially as this week will test them Mentally and Physically tested starting from Friday.

Phoenix play 3 games in 3 days and will push them to their limits for sure. First up for Manchester is the Sheffield Steeldogs and if any of the Phoenix players are fit enough after the expected bruising encounter with their bitter rivals, they then face the Bracknell Bees down at the ‘Hive’ Saturday night, before finishing off the exhausting Long Weekender with a match against the Swindon Wildcats at the Altrincham Ice Dome on Sunday Evening
