CANADA DESTROY DAVOS IN FINAL

2012 SPENGLER CUP FINAL @ DAVOS,SWITZERLAND

  HC DAVOS   2

TEAM CANADA 7

Well this was it! The Climax to a great tournament in the Vallant Arena in Davos,Switzerland.
The Final of the Prestigious Spengler Cup would be contested between the two sides that were deserving to be there in the end on merit. That being the powerful, energetic and defensively solid Team Canada lead by Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers back in the NHL. Their opponents would be the Hosts of the tournament and reigning & defending holders of the Spengler Cup, Hockey Club Davos.

So it was hoped around by all the locals at least, That the Cup would stay in Switzerland for another year and that the home team could avenge the 5-0 lost, That the Canadians handed to the European side on Thursday.

The Canadians were missing Byron Ritchie who was as predicted, Was suspended by officials for his Check to the head on Fribourg-Gotteron defenseman Roman Loeffel in the Semi-Final clash the day before. So this would arguably be the most Star studded final in the Spengler Cup for along time, With alot of NHL stars on both sides.

So Referee Antonin Jerabek of the Czech Republic dropped the puck center ice and off we went for this Final to get underway. And the Final started with a bang, As Team Canada got off to an absolute flyer.
As they scored under a min thanks to Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins, after Sam Gagner threw one on net and the Davos Netminder lost sight where on earth the puck was. So as he moved to get up from making the original save, It dropped to the ice with Bergeron was on hand at the front of the net to just poke it goal wards, Sending the traveling Canadian fans into delight as goal was clocked at 0:46 on the board.

Damien Brunner of Davos was then called for BOARDING at 3:07, As he came hard into the back of Carlo Colaiacovo who wasn`t expecting to be hit and he ended up smashing into the boards with his arm & shoulder area taking the brunt of the fall. And nearly taking John Tavares with him too in the process.

So the Canadians went on the Powerplay and it lasted all of  4 seconds, With Bergeron winning the draw and passing the puck to Defenseman Jason Demers who was on the blue line. He quickly dished it off to fellow D man Derrick Walser on the left side and his blast from the Point hit the inside of the post and giving a 2-0 lead to Team Canada. Walser goal was timed at 3:12 with assists going to Demers and Bergeron.

Davos went on their first Powerplay of the game, As Joe Thornton drew the penalty as a couple of sticks were prodding the Wiley Veteran, But Holden caught his ankle and tripped him up with the blade part of the stick, leading to the penalty. So Josh Holden went to the penalty box for TRIPPING at 7:19 in the 1st.
HC Davos couldn`t make much of the Powerplay what so ever, But the Canadians did!

As after a shot was blocked by one of the Team Canada players, he flipped into mid ice where Patrice Bergeron out skated Damien Brunner poking just out of his reach to the boards.
But Bergeron kept his legs moving, Managed to get control of the puck off the boards behind the Davos zone and with Brunner still on his tail, skated around the net and then turned to make space. His pass was fired in cross the crease where Ryan Smyth was coming from the back.

Smyth drove to the front of the net and diverted it on nets, where Genoni made a point blank save and as he fell to ground  the rebound fell kindly to Smyth who banked it in off netminder, With the best he could do was push it into the inside of the goals as Canada was running riot now. And we hadn`t even played 10mins yet, the 3rd goal was timed at 9.07.

Davos was given another Powerplay as Bergeron sat for 2 minutes in the penalty box for HOLDING at  10:12.  Brunner than a good chance to pull a goal back, As he broke away from the 2 Canadian defensemen but just couldn`t beat Devan Dubnyk in the Team Canada goals. As he tried to make a move at the last minute but, he seemed to slip as he tried to do it but still had enough time to try and force it in, but was cleared away.

Tim Ramholt then took a penalty for HC Davos as he had hold of Sam Gagner and had his stick too wrapped around him as well, which lead to Gagner taking a tumble to the ice and being called for TRIPPING, as Ramholt pleaded innocent over the call, time on call was 13:47

The Hosts then pulled a goal back at 17:19, As Noah Schneeberger was battling along the boards with Jason Spezza managed to knock the puck away to his team mate who gave a quick pass to Dario Burgler.
And he skated across half way line, moving to the boards with electric pace and the came cutting back towards middle again before beating Dubnyk with a great slapshot that made the score 3-1.

END OF 1ST PERIOD:   HC  DAVOS   1  -  3   TEAM CANADA

2nd Period restarted, and took 1:34 into the period for the Canadians to extend the lead the lead to a 3 goal game again. As Dupoint started the goal from behind his own line, seeing Bergeron open on the blue line just outside the HC Davos Offensive Zone. His hard long pass found Bergeron who used his great vision spotting Smyth driving to the net so he passed it just out of the defender reach and Ryan Smyth latched and put it home for a 4-1 game at 21:34.

Things got a little heated with Josh Holden & Joe Thornton, As Holden took Thornton to the boards and gave him a quick jab with his stick off the play and then Thornton responded with a hard push. Then Holden and Thornton had a little bit of handbags, with Holden giving a couple of jabs to Thornton face, As the tall forward just smiled and laughed at him as both got ROUGHING minor penalties timed at 22:35.

Ryan Smyth then went for SLASHING at 26:27 as Davos broke from their own zone and Smyth slashed his stick across the wrist area of Petr Sykora to slow him down.
The game was getting a bit fiesty now between the 2 sides as HC Davos was getting frustrated, being 4-1 down and not getting anything going at all. And when a clean hit on Beat Forster by Josh Holden against the boards between the team bench was took exception to by the Forster, Holden went to get up and Forster threw his hands in a pushing motion towards the Canadian head and stayed down on the ice.

The Davos player received a 2+2 for ROUGHING at 29:30, much to the Home crowd disliking & Forster himself who threw his water bottle down in anger and disgust at the call as he through he made the incident look far worst than it was.

So the proceeding 4 min Powerplay Canada was put on was greeted with booing and whistling by Davos fans throughout the whole Penalty Kill. But the noise had no effect to the Canadian side, who were fully focus on the game at hand.
And so wasn`t to much of a surprise when they got Goal number 5 just coming 52 seconds into the extended powerplay. With Sam Gagner pass through the legs of the oncoming Davos player, fell perfectly to the stick of Derrick Walser and his pass across nets was diverted in by John Tavares getting tap in from close range. It was basicially party time for the Canadians as with just under a Period and halfway to go, they were running an bossing this game in every department, the time on the goal was clocked at 30:24.

This also made the coach from HC Davos change Goaltender as Leonardo Genoni was pulled for Reto Berra to take over duties between the pipes for Davos. Patrice Bergeron was called at 30:52, for HOOKING as Damien Brunner was evading the defense and Bergeron just hooked him down before he got too far.

But not long into the Powerplay, Robin Grossmann got called for HOLDING as he battled with Matt Duchene he lost his stick and held him. Gave him a push to the ice and held him against the boards to which the ref raised his arm to call the penalty at 31:25.
And then to make matters worse for the Swiss side they were then called for TOO MANY MEN at 34:09.

END OF 2ND:      HC   DAVOS  1  -  5  TEAM CANADA

3rd period was academic as Team Canada had proved to be too Strong and Powerful as predicted before the puck dropped, Canada then turned it into another rout of the Swiss side, As Goals from Jason Spezza and a Short handed effort from John Tavares helped Team Canada reach  7-1, Before Rafeal Diaz got a late consolation goal for the out going Holders of the Spengler Cup.

FINAL SCORE HC  DAVOS   2 -  7   TEAM CANADA

Man of the Match: no surprise went to Parice Bergeron who Scored 1 and made 2 ASSISTS and a +3 OVERALL in the game.  So Ryan Smyth went over to collect the Spengler Cup on behalf of Team Canada and raised it up to signify new Champions of the Cup and crowned  SPENGLER CUP CHAMPIONS OF 2012 and win it for the 12th time in the tournaments history 86 Year history.
