The best was saved til last. The Slovnaft Arena in Bratislava was attended by 2,275 spectators for the final of the Red Bulls Salute, which saw Luleå Hockey take on Fär-jestad BK. Both teams showed their class from the drop of the puck. Both teams had three games under their belts. Currently third in the Swedish Elite League, Luleå Hockey brought their strongest line-up with them to the Red Bulls Salute final. In the twelfth minute Joonas Vihko capitalised on a power play situation to score the first goal. Then the boys in red and yellow flexed their muscles, putting up a solid defence and leaving their opponents very little opportunity to equalise. Färjestad BK were determined to find their way back into the game. During a five-on-three power play it was thanks to goalie David Rauito that the Caps-beaters held onto their lead.

The two Swedish teams know each other inside out, so there were no great surprises in the final period. Färjestad BK were determined to equalise, but Luleå Hockey closed off all the angles in front of their goal. After 13 minutes Joonas Vihko scored his second goal of the game, effectively sealing victory for his team. The puck bounced off the pads of goalie Fredrik Petterson-Wentzell and it played right into Vihko's hands. He pounced on the opportunity and promptly put Luleå Hockey ahead 2-0, ultimately wrapping things up.

It was a dream come true for double goal scorer Joonas Vihko: "You take part in the tournament to win. That's just what we did. It was a tactical game, we defended well and gave them little room to manoeuvre. It was tough for us and for them to score goals. For my second goal I had luck on my side. In November Färjestad BK won in the league, but this time it was our turn."

RED BULLS SALUTE - FINAL
Luleå Hockey – Färjestad BK 2-0 (1-0, 0-0, 1-0)Goals: Vihko (12th/PP, 54th)
Last year Luleå Hockey came third in the Red Bulls Salute and now it's their turn to lift the trophy. This was also Färjestad BK's best finish to date; last year they finished in fourth place. In 2007 Färjestad BK reached the final of the Red Bulls Salute and were defeated by NHL team the L.A. Kings, but back then the Red Bulls Salute was still an invitation tournament.
The third European Trophy, with the Red Bulls Salute forming the final tournament, is now over and as well as delivering some high-calibre ice hockey it has also made me-dia history, with the final in Bratislava streamed live on the World Wide Web for the first time (www.redbull.com) in addition to yesterday's television coverage in the participating countries.
Ice hockey fans can also look forward to more top international games in the 2013-2014 season, when the fourth European Trophy will take place; 32 teams split into four divisions - most likely the same teams as this year - will again battle it out for a place in the final tournament. The venue for the Red Bulls Salute 2013 will probably be decided in January 2013. When once again we'll say – We salute you!
